The Moana Reference You Missed In Encanto

By JASON CONNOLLY

Disney's latest film, "Encanto," has been remarkably successful since premiering in November. The song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, and the film received three Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song.

In the film, Camilo Madrigal (Rhenzy Feliz), who was born with the ability to shapeshift, uses his power to get a second helping at breakfast. When his father, Felix, tells him to put the food back, Camilo turns back to his normal form and says, "worth a shot!"

The brief moment of levity has nothing to do with the rest of the scene, but director Jared Bush recently revealed that the line was a reference to Maui's "worth a shot" joke in "Moana." It's a neat little callback and one that is so subtle we doubt anyone would have noticed it without Bush's help.

In "Moana,” Maui (Dwayne Johnson) says the line after tossing Moana into the water, only for her to magically reappear back atop their raft. The reference goes beyond just a repeated line, as both Maui and Camilo are mischievous shapeshifters who use their powers for petty reasons.
