The Iconic Top
Gun Scene That
Had To Be Added
After Filming
By Conner Reilly
"Top Gun," one of the ‘80s most iconic movies, went through some notable edits and reshoots during its production. This is not uncommon, but it turns out that a couple of its most iconic scenes were added in reshoots after filming had commenced.
The classic (and often parodied) love scene between Charlie (Kelly McGillis) and Maverick (Tom Cruise) was added in reshoots because the film's original cut did not include one. When the film was screened for test audiences, it was decided one was needed to help further explore the romance between the characters.
The scene where the two characters flirt in an elevator was also added in reshoots. McGillis was sporting brown hair for a different role at the time, but Charlie's blonde locks were already in the film, so the actress wore a baseball cap in the elevator and the love scene was filmed in silhouette.
