The Fascinating
Way Storage
Wars' Dan Dotson
Got His Start As
An Auctioneer
By ADAM PONCHAROENSUB
In April 2022, A&E’s “Storage Wars” wrapped up its 14th season with its familiar cast of larger-than-life personalities. Of course, nobody can forget the showstopping villain Dave Hester with his trademarked "YUUUP!" or original cast member Barry Weiss, who always seems to overspend on lockers, but what about the quieter auctioneer Dan Dotson?
Known for his lightning-fast, "Rap God"-like bid acknowledgments, Dotson rarely gets involved with the cast, aside from auctioning off lockers, and it turns out that auctioneering is second nature to him. Dotson was taught auctioneering by his grandfather at age 11 and now runs American Auctioneers, a company that manages over 3,000 auctions and appraisals annually.
In a 2014 interview with Dotsun posted to his official YouTube channel, he gleefully expresses to "have enjoyed this business immensely for 39 years. [...] And it's just brought everything into my life. I met my wife at auctions. [...] Every day it changes and that's one of the reasons that I just really like this industry. It keeps my attention and it's brought a lot of good opportunities."
