Writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata recently concluded “Platinum End,” their reunion project after collaborating on the acclaimed “Death Note.” “Platinum End” is about teenager Mirai Kakehashi, who was rescued from attempted suicide by the angel Nasse, given superhuman powers, and thrown into a contest with 13 other humans to become the new God.
In the final 24th episode, viewers find out that Kakehashi has not won the supernatural competition, but has returned to a normal life where he learns to appreciate being alive and has even fallen in love. The contestant who did win the competition is Shuji Nakaumi, a young, depressive boy who has been watched over by the angel Ogaro.
Nakaumi’s victory is a shocking twist because he is someone who believes that if a person wishes to die, they should be allowed to take their own life, and even helped his parents and grandparents to do so earlier on. As the new God, he turns this thought into action by committing suicide himself which caused all the angels and humans to vanish.
