Sy’s obsession with the Yorkin family leads him to ambush the father, Will, and his mistress, forcing the pair to pose in various sexual positions while he snaps pics of them. Sy was using the photos to threaten Will after his copies of the family’s photographs were discovered, and there’s a reason why Sy did all of this.

Final Photo ShooT

After Sy gets arrested and is talking with detectives, it is implied that Sy was abused as a child. However, the fact that there were only shots of random things inside the room on Sy’s rolls of film leads one to wonder whether Sy even took the pictures or imagined everything.

Sy As A Kid

Director Mark Romanek explains, "When he melts down to the detective, you can see that he's pulling from personal experiences, and the cop even says, 'It all makes sense now.'" As for the missing pictures, most agree Sy didn't take them and tortured Will psychologically to make him feel how Sy felt when he was a child being photographed by his father.
