Bialik Shares
Secret Behind
Amy's Glasses
By JACOB WILLEFORD
Mayim Bialik’s portrayal of Nobel-Prize-winning neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler is one of the most memorable characters in “The Big Bang Theory,” and her iconic glasses are essential to her character. She wears the unassuming glasses when viewers are first introduced to her late in Season 3, and Amy is rarely seen without them.
While answering questions about "The Big Bang Theory" on her official YouTube channel, Mayim Bialik revealed the glasses Amy wears are not real, although it has nothing to do with the character and instead is strictly a technical thing. "Amy's glasses do not have lenses; none of the glasses that any of the characters wear have lenses because of glare," she revealed.
Unfortunately, Bialik genuinely needs glasses in real life, so while shooting the show, she would have to wear her real ones up until they filmed her scenes. “I am near-sighted and have astigmatism, so I wear my real glasses right up until the very last minute, and then I put on my Amy glasses and just hope I'm looking at the right people,” Bialik explained.
