The Animation Studio Fined Futurama For This Scene

By BETHY SQUIRES

“Futurama” is deceptively complicated to animate, as it blends 2D and 3D animation in almost every episode. The trick is to “dumb down” the 3D animation and not make it look too realistic.

This has to be blended with the character style of “Futurama” creator Matt Groening. In the final direct-to-DVD "Futurama" movie, "Into the Wild Green Yonder," these elements came together for one big, very costly scene.

The studio Rough Draft had to animate over 250 characters in one scene for the finale. Co-creator David X. Cohen noted that Rough Draft charged them a hefty premium for this, but, despite this, it made for a perfect “Futurama” send-off.
