Though it had been planned as early as 2015, “Star Trek 4” has been through several scripts and writers. The current script is being co-written by Josh Friedman ("Snowpiercer") and Cameron Squires ("WandaVision") based on an earlier draft by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and the film itself is set to premiere on December 23, 2023.
All main cast members who have starred in the Kelvin timeline movies since 2009 are set to return, including Chris Pine as James Kirk and Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura. According to J. J. Abrams, the story will also introduce new characters that are "really fun and exciting" and will "help take 'Star Trek' into areas that you've just never seen before."
At this point, no plot details for “Star Trek 4” have been revealed, but it will reportedly take place after the events of 2016's “Star Trek Beyond.” It won’t explore a reunion between Captain Kirk and his father George involving time travel, nor will it tie into any of the current or recent TV series about Star Trek (since they are outside the Kelvin timeline.)
