"Rick and Morty" is pop culture for people who love pop culture, and as the show is a work of cosmic horror itself, any popular horror references excite fans. Creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon are acutely aware of this as they create entire episodes revolving around iconic horror franchises, including the reference to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu in the opening credits.
In Season 5, Episode 5, "Amortycan Grickfitti," a group of horribly mutilated interdimensional demons, which strongly resemble the Cenobites from the "Hellraiser" franchise, befriend then kidnap Jerry (Chris Parnell). The demons see his tedious personality as a form of pain, which brings them pleasure, and this episode may have been the most brutal in terms of how Jerry is treated.
Season 1’s, "Lawnmower Dog," is an absolute fan favorite as Rick and Morty encounter Scary Terry, a Freddy Krueger parody played by Jess Harnell, while attempting to incept Morty's math teacher into giving him good grades. They end up befriending Terry who helps them complete their mission, ensuring Morty is able to continue exploring the terror of the cosmos with his grandfather.
