Fans have been hoping for flashbacks to the prequel era ever since it was confirmed that Hayden Christensen would be returning as Anakin in “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” “Part V” finally delivered on that hope, showing a snapshot of the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan back when they were apprentice and master.
The flashback shows Obi-Wan engaging Anakin in a dueling lesson and is spread throughout the episode as a framing device. While teaching Anakin the importance of not focusing too much on winning a fight, Obi-Wan also points out that there’s more than one way to duel, using the Force to beat Anakin in their practice bout even after getting disarmed.
Obviously, this lesson is a way of connecting to the present-day events on Jabiim — as Kenobi once again proves there are more ways to fight than just with a lightsaber. Using his diplomatic skills to probe Inquisitor Reva’s mind, he finds the truth about her traumatic experience during Order 66 and ultimately uses it to turn her against Darth Vader.
