Much like his hot-shot character Rooster, Miles Teller came close to missing out on playing the role, and it was because of one of his own co-stars. As is often the case, a bit of friendly competition led Teller and another actor to fight for the same role.
In a recent interview, Teller's co-star Glen Powell revealed that before he was cast as cocky surprise hero Hangman, he initially had his sights on the role of Rooster, instead. "I actually auditioned for Miles Teller's role, Rooster. And I didn't end up getting that role, and I wasn't really sure I was going to do the movie [when they offered me this other role]."
He made such an impression during the audition process that the big names behind the film requested Powell be used elsewhere, and it was Tom Cruise’s pitch that convinced Powell to take the different role. The result led to Powell bringing a scene-stealing performance that was fueled by traces of Val Kilmer's Iceman, and a splash of a younger Maverick.
