With more than a year left before the planned May 5, 2023 release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” rumors began to spread about a possible prequel centered around Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), the forcefully adopted daughters of Thanos. With him now gone, the only way to see them as a family would be in a prequel.
However, Writer-Director James Gunn refuted the speculations by tweeting: “lol no – he tortured them, not exactly a ‘family-like’ relationship.” Saldana has also hinted in an interview that she would likely be done playing Gamora after “Vol 3.”
Given Gunn’s success with “Peacemaker,” it wouldn’t be a surprise if some kind of “Guardians” spinoff will also happen in the future. Despite Saldana’s previous comments, she has also voiced interest in exploring Gamora’s origin story (briefly shown as a flashback in “Avengers: Infinity War") in a new interview, so fans will just have to wait and see.
