Director James Gunn confirmed during Marvel Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be “The end of that story.” The compelling narrative arc of the beloved intergalactic space crew began in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and it’s coming to an end with this final film.
Gunn told the crowd, “I'm sorry. Some stories have an end. It doesn't mean everybody dies.” A May 2021 tweet confirmed that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" would be his last entry, and comments dating back to 2017 echo this official announcement.
While there’s a possibility of a fourth “Guardians” movie, the film will most likely consist of a new cast of characters and another creator. Continuing the franchise might be challenging, as much of the movies’ freshness came from Gunn’s unique vision, with Disney having a hard time replacing the director during the brief period following his temporary firing.
