Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Why It Bombed At The Box Office
By ETHAN ZACK
Despite warm post-release reception from critics and Harrison Ford’s return as the titular main character, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” underperformed commercially.
“Dial of Destiny” grossed just $82 million during its first five days in U.S. theaters, which is modest when compared to the film’s inflated production budget of $295 million.
The film was first shown at the 76th Annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. The negative reviews from critics at the festival may have hurt the movie’s marketing.
The 2008 predecessor of “Dial of Destiny,” "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," performed better at the box office, despite being reviewed more negatively.
“Dial of Destiny” was not the only summer blockbuster to flop in 2023. DC’s “The Flash'' and Pixar’s “Elemental” both underperformed, which shows a greater problem in the industry.
Not everyone who wants to see "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" is going to do so in theaters, and will instead wait until the film hits Disney+.
