Castiel (Misha Collins) may be one of the shining lights of the "Supernatural" legacy, but he didn't exactly start that way. In fact, show creator Eric Kripke didn’t originally want angels in the show, but he later admitted that including them led to a richer storyline and a new life for “Supernatural’s” narrative.
At first, Cas only appeared intermittently throughout Season 4 as the angel reluctant to side with his hard-lined angel family. "Well, they didn't make me a regular that quick," Collins later explained in an interview, "It was by degrees. They kept adding three more episodes … and then finally they were like, 'Alright, it looks like we're stuck with you.'"
However, despite his instrumental role in stopping the apocalyptic showdown between Michael and Lucifer, Cas became less integral in later seasons. He got demoted back to a guest star after Kripke handed the showrunner reins to Sera Gamble and was often thrust into deadly situations, but thankfully Collins confirmed his return in time for Season 9.
