How Mark Jackson
Evokes Emotion As
A Robot In The
Orville -
Exclusive
By BRANDON ROWE
“The Orville” has semi-robotic beings known as the Kaylon. In the first three seasons, the show featured different Kaylons, but Isaac, played by Mark Jackson, is the most familiar to audiences. During an exclusive interview with Looper, Jackson gave great insight into his character.
Jackson points out that the hardest roles are not necessarily the ones involving heavy emotions like sadness or anger, and explained it’s just as hard playing a character that shows nearly zero emotions. “To take the emotional heart out of a performance is very difficult because we’re all humans, and we want to communicate in the most efficient way possible,” Jackson said.
In Season 3, Episode 7 of “The Orville,” Issac is gifted an emotion chip, allowing him to feel, rather than just think. Jackson was excited that his character evolved and confessed, “He was experiencing everything for the first time — love, fear, loneliness and shame ... it was intense,” which Jackson found “was a great challenge as an actor.”
