Suspicions About
The Iron Throne

It’s not that often that a TV set piece gets talked about as much as characters within a show, but the Iron Throne on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” is one such set piece. British actress Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower in the latter and has offered some insights into exactly what it is like to sit on the Iron Throne.
In a recent interview, Cooke said that sitting on the Throne was one of the first things she did, but she notes that there is no cushioning and that one feels the weight of it. This matches George R. R. Martin's vision of the Throne as terrifying and uncomfortable, a reminder to the occupant of their immense task of commanding and directing the Seven Kingdoms.
But despite its agreed-upon stiffness and irritation, some actors from "Game of Thrones," such as Kit Harrington, have enjoyed sitting on the pointy structure. "Whenever I'm working in the studios,” he says, “I'll go and just quietly have a look in there and sit on the throne for a minute or two."
