Family Guy Was Allowed To Parody Star Wars Under One Condition

By BRANDON SHOAFF

The world that George Lucas created in the “Star Wars” franchise is not only of cinematic legend, but is also a favorite to parody by creatives like Weird Al, Kevin Smith, and Mel Brooks. Seth MacFarlane has also famously done a three-part “Star Wars” parody in “Family Guy,” and he shared Lucas’ surprising request when giving his permission.

MacFarlane recalled how after the show included one too many “Star Wars” gags, Fox’s legal department demanded that he get permission from Lucasfilm before they got sued. While MacFarlane thought that would be the end of the jokes, he was floored when Lucas gave his blessing on the one condition that the show characters look exactly like their movie counterparts.

The episodes "Blue Harvest,” "Something, Something, Something, Dark Side" and "It's A Trap!" parody the trilogy of "Star Wars: A New Hope," "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," and "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi," respectively. And instead of having animated versions of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, Peter and Lois Griffin are Han Solo and Princess Leia.
