Everything Molly's Game Doesn't Tell You About The True Story

By ROBERT BALKOVICH
“Molly’s Game,” based on the 2014 memoir of the same name, is about former professional skier turned celebrity poker ring organizer Molly Bloom. Aaron Sorkin, in his directorial debut, mostly remained faithful to the source material, but there were a few details left out.

In the beginning of “Molly’s Game,” the audience sees Bloom (Jessica Chastain) end her sports career in an epic crash during an Olympic trial run. While Bloom really did have a nasty fall during an Olympic qualifying run in 1998, it wasn’t just one crash that led her to decide to hang up her skis, but a combination of injuries and other factors.

End Of Skiing Career

In Bloom’s underground poker games in Los Angeles, there is a regular known simply as Player X (Michael Cera), who eventually betrays Bloom by moving her game to another place and encouraging other regulars to abandon her. While the film doesn’t reveal Player X’s identity, Bloom has revealed that it was “Spider-Man” actor Tobey Maguire.

Player X’s Identity

In the film, Sorkin did not focus on the many famous faces that showed up at Bloom’s games. In an interview, Bloom mentioned how having famous figures like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, and Alex Rodriguez show up to her games attracted players who were willing to make big buy-ins to sit next to their favorite celebrities.
