The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 - What We Know So Far

"The Ancient Magus' Bride" is a dark fantasy anime which is based on the manga series of the same name by Kore Yamazaki. The series focuses primarily on the story of high school student Chise Hatori (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki, who recently played Hinatsuru in Season 2 of "Demon Slayer," and played by Dani Chambers in the English dub), who sells herself into slavery after being shunned by nearly everybody in her life — including her extended family.

At a slave auction in London, Chise is bought for five million pounds by the series titular "magus," Elias Ainsworth (Ryōta Takeuchi/Brian Mathis): a mysterious supernatural being with a human body and an animal skull for a head. Elias takes Chise under his wing as his apprentice and tells her that he intends to one day make her his wife. The series primarily follows the surreal everyday life of this unusual couple as Chise learns to master her unique magical abilities (having learned from Elias that she is a rare kind of magus known as a Sleigh Beggy, and therefore has a talent for attracting magical creatures in need), and Elias takes her around on various magical adventures, learning more and more about human nature from his prolonged interactions with her.

Season 1 took us on an expansive journey across the world, where Elias and Chise encountered a wide range of magical environments and villainous foes. Considering the fact that this first season wrapped up all the way back in 2017, fans ought to be extremely excited to learn that the series' hotly anticipated Season 2 is finally on its way — and releasing sooner than you might think. Here's everything we know so far about Season 2 of "The Ancient Magus' Bride."

When and where will The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 be released?

As revealed by the official "The Ancient Magus' Bride" website, the anime's highly anticipated second season will be released in April of 2023. The announcement was accompanied by a promotional image that showed Chise Hatori's blackened arm (which holds the fatal dragon's curse that is destined to kill her) creeping into her back –- perhaps hinting that the curse is spreading. This announcement also clarified that episodes would be broadcast on television via TOKYO MX and BS11 and will be available the same day on Prime Video and Hikari TV.

In addition, a short teaser for the new season was uploaded to YouTube, which included brief glimpses of some new scenes as well as a few shots from iconic moments in Season 1. If a few of these scenes looked a bit different to you, that might be because the series is no longer being produced by Wit Studio (which famously produced several early seasons of "Attack on Titan") and is now being helmed by Studio Kafka — a production company specifically created for the show's three-part OAD series (via Crunchyroll).

Who is in the cast of The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2?

According to Crunchyroll, several prominent cast members are set to return for the second season of "The Ancient Magus' Bride," including the voice actors for both series leads: Atsumi Tanezaki and Ryōta Takeuchi, who voice Chise Hatori and Elias Ainsworth, respectively.

Other returning voice actors include Koki Uchiyama: who plays a large dog known as Ruth functioning as Chise's familiar, Aya Endo: who voices a supernatural landlady named Silky who presides over Elias and Chise's home, and Satoshi Hino: who voices the alchemist Mikhail Renfred. Last but not least, there's Mutsumi Tamura, who plays Mikhail's apprentice — Alice.

Outside of these returning cast members, it's unclear who will be joining the series to voice new characters for Season 2 or whether or not any other characters will be changing voice actors between the two seasons. On top of that, the announcement has not mentioned whether the English voice actors will be returning for the second season's dub. In any case, fans ought to be happy that — at the very least — the series is maintaining the voice actors of the show's two most prominent characters.

What is the plot of The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2?

The ending of "The Ancient Magus' Bride" Season 1 saw Chise Hatori finally confronting the fatal curse that she had inherited as a Sleigh Beggy, following a battle wherein Chise and Elias Ainsworth faced off against Cartiphilius (Ayumu Murase/Josh Grelle) and the fae known as Ashen Eye (voiced by Jouji Nakata).

The battle ends with Chise inheriting Cartaphilus' immortal curse, and although this saves her from death, for the time being, her shriveled black arm is a reminder that her own dragon curse will still claim her life one day. The final moments of the season also saw Chise and Elias renewing their commitment to one another as apprentice and master in an almost faux wedding ceremony: wherein Chise wears a dress and the pair exchange magical rings.

Season 2 is likely to pick up shortly after this concise finale and should adapt the next arc from the manga: Chise will attend an alchemist college while battling the ever-present spread of the dragon's curse through her arm and the rest of her body. This arc will introduce Chise and Elias to plenty of new allies and villains, and much of the season's plot will focus on the mysteries and politics within this ancient and dangerous school of magic.

In any case, this exciting new storyline ought to get fans excited for what is certain to be a unique chapter in the lives of the Ancient Magus and his bride.
