Will Smith To Host Darren Aronofsky Nat Geo Series
The story of Earth will have a superstar narrator.
Deadline reports that Will Smith will host the upcoming National Geographic series One Strange Rock from mother! director Darren Aronofsky and award-winning producer Jane Root (Mankind: The Story of All of Us). Watch a teaser above.
In the 10-part event series, Smith will guide viewers on an epic journey around the world and into outer space. It'll be a visual spectacular demonstrating why Earth is so unique and brimming with life among an unforgiving cosmic arena. The show will also feature an elite group of astronauts including Chris Hadfield, Jeff Hoffman, Mae Jemison, Jerry Linenger, Mike Massimino, Leland Melvin, Nicole Stott, and Peggy Whitson. Together, they'll tell personal memoirs of our planet seen from space, which will lead to important themes explored on the series: the beginning of life, cosmic violence, human intelligence, sacrifice, death, and more.
"I am thrilled to have Will Smith on board to guide our series," said Aronofsky. "His charisma, intelligence and humanity will add greatly to the project, helping welcome viewers into this unique narrative about the mind-blowing wonders that make life on Earth possible."
Root said the show will be more like a big-budget movie than a TV documentary. "Our goal here is to reimagine factual programming and give viewers a cinematic spectacle like they have never seen before," she said. We'll unpack the science behind our marvelous planet and provide stories that are entertaining and provocative; and who better to do that with than the visionary Darren Aronofsky and his partners at Protozoa Pictures, the incomparable Will Smith and our team of legendary astronauts?"
One Strange Rock will premiere globally on Nat Geo in March.
