The Last Jedi International Trailer Gives First Look At Canto Bight
Canto Bight is the one place you may be tempted to spend all your money–if it isn't swindled out of your pockets before then, that is.
A new international trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi gives fans the first official look at the forthcoming film's casino city that is glittering from the outside but swirling with villainy on the inside.
In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment around the two-minute mark, the footage reveals a pack of creatures bounding across neatly cut shrubbery outside a casino before crashing through the building's window and stomping over tables. Based on what we can make out from this part of the the clip, Canto Bight looks to be pristinely kept and beautifully decorated. This perfectly aligns with the official description of Canto Bight: "A casino city and playground for the galaxy's ultra-rich. It's a place of both opportunity and high stakes, filled with casinos, racetracks, and other expensive distractions."
It also appears that the creatures shown are Fathiers, sometimes called "space horses," a graceful and majestic non-sentient species often used for riding. Fathiers are known for their incredible speed, and because of that, the people of Canto Bight have exploited them for use in their popular competitive races.
Last Jedi creature concept designer Neal Scanlan previously spoke with Empire (via ScreenRant) about the Fathiers, explaining a bit more about their background and how the team brought them to life for the big screen. "Fathiers have the power and majestic quality that one might find in a male lion and also beauty in their equine aspects. They're racing creatures, with bets placed upon them, and are subjected to slightly cruel treatment," Neal stated. "We knew any version of those in a wide shot would be CG, but we produced a real-scale practical version for the first encounter with a Fathier, so it was able to look over the stable door and Finn [John Boyega] could touch and act with it. They're amazing creatures."
Newcomer Kelly Marie Tran, who plays Resistance worker Rose Tico, will join Finn on his expedition to Canto Bight. The pair seek additional help from the mysterious and intimidating codebreaker known as DJ, played by Benicio del Toro, so perhaps all three will encounter a Fathier at some point.
Elsewhere in the international trailer, we see a few new shots of the intense battle on the planet of Crait, which show Resistance fighters getting attacked by First Order TIE Fighters. Take a look in the video above.
The Last Jedi stars Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, and Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo.
