Only Murders In The Building Fans Are Getting Impatient Over An Unresolved Detail
"Only Murders in the Building" has been an undeniably big success for Hulu. In fact, barely three episodes into its second season, Hulu quickly renewed the series for Season 3 (via Deadline). The series, which stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, is equal parts murder mystery and comedy. As a result, it's only natural that the show utilizes a lot of clue gathering as it works toward solving its central mystery.
Of course, a big part of mystery-building is introducing an assortment of clues that will eventually lead to answers, or at least clues that lead to more pertinent clues. Throughout Season 2 of "Only Murders in the Building," writers have given viewers a plethora of clues to digest. From a subplot involving the father of Charles-Haden Savage (Martin) to the introduction of a mysterious, new character played by Cara Delevingne, there is more than enough to unravel this season.
Understandably, the mystery genre can require a heavy amount of patience from its viewers. With only the central mystery and the chemistry of the cast to keep the momentum rolling ever onward, writers have to make sure that neither aspect is ever lacking. While the show has obviously been successful at this, there's one unresolved detail from the Season 1 finale that has some fans feeling impatient for answers.
Who is the mysterious texter?
Over on Reddit, u/gregieb429 let it be known that they were baffled that the main trio didn't make it a priority to find out exactly who texted them to get out of the building in Season 1, Episode 10 ("Open and Shut"). While Charles speculates that it was most likely Detective Williams (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) who sent the text, it's not really explored in the early parts of Season 2, beyond Williams denying that she did so. This same Reddit user pointed out that it was weird that the characters weren't more curious and that the series seems content to abandon the detail.
More than a few people, including u/MistressMousefeather, believe that it could be Theo (James Caverly) who sent the text to warn them, though they admitted that they didn't have a solid foundation for such an idea. While this is an interesting theory, it doesn't exactly track with where the story has been going over the past couple of episodes. Theo recently helped Mabel (Selena Gomez) try to track down the person covered in glitter, but he didn't mention anything about texting them that night.
One big reason why fans may not have gotten an answer to this question early on is that it wasn't the central mystery for the first few episodes of Season 2. During an Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunner John Hoffman at the conclusion of Season 1, the writer teased that one of the big central questions for the show was how Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell) made her way into Mabel's apartment. Perhaps Hoffman thought fans would be more focused on that rather than who texted the trio.
