Supergirl Casts The Legion's Brainiac 5

Supergirl has just gained another ally. TVLine reports that Defiance actor Jesse Rath has signed on for the recurring role of Brainiac 5, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes who journeys to National City from the 31st Century. He'll help to assist Supergirl in her fight against L-Corp CEO Samantha Arias, who will later become known as the supervillain Reign (Odette Annable).

In the comics, Brainiac 5 and Supergirl have a bit of a romantic history, and showrunner Andrew Kreisberg has teased that this is something that could take place on the show as well. "Someone down the road will like Kara a lot, which will be a lot of fun," Kreisberg previously said. This is not the first time Brainiac 5 has been brought to the small screen– Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James Marsden played the character in a season 10 episode of Smallville.

Brainiac 5 is set to debut in season three, episode 10, which is aptly titled "Legion of Super-Heroes." Rath most recently appeared on The CW's short-lived dramedy No Tomorrow, which was canceled after just one season. His other credits include recurring roles on shows like Aaron Stone, 18 to Life, Mudpit, Being Human, The Brief, and 19-2. He has also appeared in Code Black, His Turn, The Good Lie, My Babysitter's a Vampire, The Trotsky, and The Greatest Game Ever Played.

A number of new faces have joined Supergirl's third season, including Amy Jackson as the superhero Saturn Girl, Erica Durance as Alura (replacing Broadway star Laura Benanti), Adrian Pasdar as Malcolm Edge, and Carl Lumbly as M'yrnn J'onzz. The show airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
