The Orville Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign

"The Orville" is Seth MacFarlane's lighthearted homage to "Star Trek," of which he's a huge fan. Far more than just a few punchlines mixed in with some wicked-looking prosthetics and space travel, the series delves into complex topics like theocracy, gender affirmation, misogyny, and neurodiversity. "When we began this, it was designed to be a little bit more of a hybrid, straddling the line pretty evenly between comedy and drama," MacFarlane told Deadline. "With an hour-long show, in order to sustain it, you have to have real stakes." Perhaps the main thing that makes "The Orville" so great is its ability to present these ideas without losing its focus on the daily lives of the crew.

As the USS Orville sets sail across the galaxy under the capable command of Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane), its officers hang out, fall in love, and find ways to fill the mundane moments between Krill and Kaylon attacks. If you love "The Orville" as much as we do, read on and find out which character from the show you are, based on your zodiac sign.

Aries: Ed Mercer

With a birthday falling between March 21 and April 21, Aries rams will find their "Orville" kindred in the indomitable Captain Ed Mercer, one of the most gifted captains in the Planetary Union. Highly intelligent, Ed stood out at the academy for his high scores and was considered a gifted officer until his personal problems derailed his career. Those born under the Aries sign have some of the most adventurous spirits in the zodiac, something that draws Ed to space exploration.

Like his fellow Aries spirits, Ed isn't afraid of taking on a challenge, whether it's sailing through officer training at Union Point, facing the Kaylon conflict, or dealing with his duplicitous ex Teleya. Armed with his Navidian micro-silk floss, a good bourbon, and a solid crew, Ed can accomplish anything he puts his mind to.

In relationships, the fiery Aries heart can be vulnerable to jealousy, something Ed experiences after he learns Kelly cheated on him with a blue-skinned Retepsian named Darulio, whose intense pheromones make him utterly irresistible. Unfortunately for the pair, Ed's stubbornness leads to him shutting her out completely rather than taking the time to understand that it wasn't really her fault.

Being a naturally optimistic ram, Ed keeps a Kermit the Frog toy on his desk. He tells Bortus that he looks up to the Muppet because he "keeps his cool in a crisis" and "admires greatness in people." A natural leader himself, Ed manages to remain a friend to his crewmates without compromising his leadership, something few starship captains have been able to navigate.

Taurus: Bortus

If your birthday lands between April 20 and May 20 (and you love corner pieces of birthday cake the most), your Planetary Union officer is the lovable Bortus (an unrecognizable Peter Macon). As a Taurus, Bortus has an all-or-nothing personality. The earthy bull that he is, Bortus is something of a homebody and enjoys hanging out with his family. Although he doesn't have many close relationships, Bortus values his friends and enjoys spending time with them via Environmental Simulator, sharing movie nights and hosting them for dinner — even if it doesn't always go well.

The Moclan is also something of a people pleaser, happily eating inedible objects to entertain his crewmates. A natural performer, Bortus loves to sing, and his baritone performances are a hit among the crew. Moclans in general are known for their stubborn ways, and Bortus' Taurus spirit struggles with change. But when his daughter Topa needs him, this stern officer is willing to put his child first, even if it means blowing up his marriage and risking his career as a Union officer. "If you want something done, ask a Taurus," says Cosmopolitan. "There is no task or challenge that will beat them, they have endless reserves of tenacity, patience and resilience."

Gemini: Gordon Malloy

If you were born under the Gemini sign (May 21 to June 21), you have a celestial kinship with the gifted pilot and helmsman Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes). Captain Mercer's pal from his academy days, Malloy is an easygoing guy who is popular among his crewmates. One of the most likable signs in the zodiac, charming and charismatic Geminis have a natural sense of humor and can carry a conversation with anyone. Like his fellow air signs, Malloy will always prioritize a work-life balance over professionalism, whether it's wearing shorts to work or taking time out for extracurricular activities.

Ruled by Mercury, thrill-seeking Geminis love excitement. For Malloy, this translates to some pretty daring — and often impressive — shuttle maneuvers. When he's not on the job, Malloy loves to have a good time and can sometimes be found LARPing in the Environmental Simulator. He engages in wild west shootouts, fights medieval warfare, and trains with Justin the Ogre.

Cancer: Dr. Claire Finn

If your birthday falls between June 22 and July 22, you're a Cancer and you may find you have a good deal in common with the lovely Dr. Claire Finn. As the crew of the Orville journeys through space and time, they are lucky to have Claire watching over their health. A consummate professional, this water sign is also among the kindest and most sensitive officers living aboard the Orville, someone who often goes above and beyond the call of duty in service of others, even offering to give up her career to help Topa. Claire also understands the importance of self-care and enjoys making time for a glass of wine with her dear friend and fellow officer Kelly Grayson.

The ultimate space mom, Claire always puts her children Marcus and Ty first. She's also completely honest about her struggles as a parent, reaching out to her family when she needs support rather than trying to carry the burden alone. The good doctor is down-to-earth and has a deep love of music and literature, especially the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson. She also tends to see the goodness in other people, a gift that drives her relationship with Isaac. At the same time, Claire isn't afraid to put up boundaries when she needs to, which is part of what makes her the perfect match for her A.I. loverboy.

Leo: John LaMarr

If you're a Leo (July 23 to August 22), you'll likely have a lot in common with John LaMarr (J. Lee). The chief engineer's shenanigan-fueled bromance with Gordon Malloy and frequent silliness are misleading, as he is one of the most intelligent and capable officers on the Orville — and in all the Planetary Union, for that matter. Despite his brilliant mind, self-described "space man" LaMarr is one of the most laid-back and approachable officers in the fleet, often found sipping a cold soda on the bridge.

Leos are known for their confidence, and LaMarr's natural charisma makes him a sought-after man on the ship. LaMarr once managed to pull off dating both heads of a two-headed Keribex. "It'd still be going on," he said in Season 2. "But the left head always wanted to go hiking, and that's just sort of a deal-breaker for me." Like all Leos, LaMarr can be a bit of a goofball, but he has no problem taking care of business when it counts. He inspires his engineering team with his leadership while increasing engine efficiency and maintaining the Orville with skill and precision.

Virgo: Charly Burke

Fans of "The Orville" born under the earth sign Virgo (August 23 to September 22) share zodiac chemistry with ensign Charly Burke (Anne Winters). Charly transferred to the Orville during Season 3 after the USS Quimby was destroyed during the Battle of Earth, and she's still working through the trauma of losing her crewmates to the Kaylon. As a Virgo, Charly has an excellent sense of spatial awareness and has the incredible ability to visualize geometry across four dimensions, a skill that comes in handy often in her role as navigator aboard the Orville.

Despite the pain she feels over losing her fellow officer Amanda (who she secretly had feelings for), Charly is a professional and always gets the job done when she is commanded to, even if she doesn't agree with her superiors. While her Virgo spirit tends to hang on to resentment and has little patience with those who have wronged her, she is capable of changing her mind and working toward understanding once she comes to see things from the other side.

Libra: Kelly Grayson

Libras (September 22 through October 23) are the scales in the zodiac, and First Officer Kelly Grayson ("Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." fan favorite Adrianne Palicki) provides the balance that keeps the Orville on an even keel. Despite their past life as a married couple, Ed and Kelly are a perfect command duo for the Orville, partly because they deeply value and respect each other and also because of Kelly's keen ability to see every side of an issue and translate what she sees to her captain. She also has a natural knack for solving conflicts that comes in handy often in her role as first officer.

Libras have a tendency to be solid on the outside and crying on the inside, and Kelly is no different — she carries a lot of complex feelings over her relationship with Ed, a relationship she eventually sacrifices for the greater good of Ed's command. But, despite their complicated relationship, the pair work together surprisingly well. As a Libra, the easy-going officer knows how to have a good time, and in her younger years, she was quite the party girl. However, Libras tend to grow into their responsibilities, and Kelly does exactly that, eventually becoming one of the most reliable and mature officers in the fleet. Of course, Libras also understand that life is all about balance, and Kelly knows that sometimes, there's nothing better than a drink with her good friend Claire to recharge her batteries.

Scorpio: Janel/Teleya

If you were born between October 23 and November 21, your zodiac sign (Scorpio) aligns with "The Orville" villain formerly known as Janel, the Krill-icious Teleya. Posing as the human dark matter cartographer Janel Tyler, Teleya played the part of the perfect Union officer without raising even the slightest suspicion among the crew. But Scorpios are known for their long-game revenge, and for Teleya, the effort to capture Ed specifically began as revenge for the death of her brother.

Scorpios are complicated souls with a depth of feeling rarely seen elsewhere in the zodiac, and Teleya is a perfect example. Like all Scorpios, Teleya is able to make dramatic changes in her life and identity, easily — and believably — adapting to life as a human. As Janel, she easily manipulates Ed into believing the feelings they share are real and he never stops believing that somewhere inside of her is a good person. However, the reality is that her intense religious zealotry and xenophobia are toxic and overwhelming, leaving little room for anything else. Despite her sharp intellect and inner complexity, Teleya is incredibly resentful and obsessive, traits that ultimately keep her from her half-human child and any kind of connection with Ed.

Sagittarius: Klyden

If you were born between November 22 and December 21, you're a Sagittarius and will click with Klyden (Chad L. Coleman). The Moclan is ready to dance every time he hears a sick beat. Bortus' mate, Klyden is a complicated Moclan who is in many ways a product of the misogynistic system he was raised under. As a faithful house husband to Bortus, Klyden has followed his mate across several postings but doesn't seem to have much of a personal life outside of his marriage to Bortus. As the emotionally-driven archer of the zodiac, Klyden is frequently argumentative and frustrated with his mate. His Sagittarian tendency to be blunt, tactless, and hostile is behind a good deal of turmoil in their marriage, despite Bortus' relatively agreeable nature.

As a Sagittarius, Klyden can have difficulty working through his emotions in a healthy way and struggles with stress. He is also unhealthily dogmatic, leaning into his extreme Moclan beliefs about gender despite his mate having a change of heart after Topa's revelation that she wants to live as a female. Klyden can also be impulsive, nearly torching his marriage after learning that Bortus plans to support their daughter. But, at the end of the day, this fire sign is capable of making the right decision and coming to terms with the mistakes of his past, even if he does so a little late in the game.

Capricorn: Isaac

If you were born between December 22 and January 19 (the Capricorn dates), your "Orville" zodiac character is Isaac. As an artificially intelligent life form, Isaac struggles with understanding almost everything about his biological counterparts including their experiences, emotions, humor, motivations, and behavior. Like his fellow Capricorns, Isaac is typically polite and respectful but can be unintentionally rude and condescending. While he doesn't smile much thanks to his RBF (resting bot face), he doesn't mean any harm and is often surprised when others are offended by his careless words.

Despite lacking emotions — at least, in a traditional sense — as well as humor, Isaac participates in practical jokes and pursues a relationship with Claire. As a Kaylon emissary and later a defector from the Kaylon race, Isaac is motivated by his duties and both driven by and defined by his algorithms, something that at one point causes him to turn on the Orville crew. Isaac has a connection with Claire's family that causes him to turn against his own kind. When given the opportunity to feel emotions, Isaac jumps at the chance and is overwhelmed by the depth of his love for the doctor and her sons.

Aquarius: Talla Keyali

If you're an Aquarius (January 20 to February 18), you share a zodiac sign with intergalactic tough gal Talla Keyali. The Orville's Xelayan chief of security, Talla comes from a military family and loves her job. She might be super cool today, but she grew up a band geek when her parents made her play the pelpifa (a Xelayan instrument that mixes musical notes with holographic patterns), which she blames for her complete lack of a dating life as a youth.

Talla's ability to think on her feet and outside the box are two factors that have helped her rise to her rank as security head for the Orville. Like other Aquarian spirits, Talla's unconventional approach to her job has garnered a reputation for being a bit rough around the edges, a reputation that isn't helped by the fact that she once punched her captain in the face — even if it was in the interest of Union-Janisi relations.

Among the crew, Talla is well-liked and always up for socializing. The officer enjoys helping others and appreciates a good challenge, two traits that come together well in her role as chief of security. She also knows exactly what she wants in a relationship and, as John LaMarr learns, she can be a pretty passionate lover. Unfortunately, due to her superhuman strength, Talla is just too passionate for LaMarr. Hearts (and bones) are broken, but an Aquarius will always bounce back.

Pisces: Yaphit

If you're a Pisces (February 19 to March 20) will no doubt have a bunch in common with one of the Orville's friendliest crew members, sentient gelatinous blob Yaphit (played by the late Norm Macdonald, who finished his voice work for Season 3 prior to his death in 2021). Although Yaphit is generally well-liked by his crewmates, he isn't without his flaws. Namely, he has trouble respecting the boundaries of others, especially when it comes to his obsessive crush on Claire Finn.

As a Pisces, Yaphit can be very sensitive and reacts strongly when he is passed over for a promotion in favor of LaMarr, even accusing Mercer of racism against gelatinous persons. But, despite the disappointment, he manages to move on from his hard feelings and even plays a vital role in saving the Orville during the Kaylon conflict, for which he is awarded a Sapphire Star. Aside from his frustration at missing out on the promotion and a tendency to feel lonely as the only gelatin aboard the ship, Yaphit is usually pretty easy going. He's super chill considering he's constantly getting stepped on.
