Star Trek Fans Already Have Some Strong Feelings About Strange New Worlds

The "Star Trek" franchise has found itself in a near-constant state of expansion since the original series hit the airwaves back in the 1960s. "Star Trek: The Animated Series," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and more have kept the series alive on television, while cinematic efforts ranging from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" to "Star Trek Beyond" did the same at the movies. Courtesy of Alex Kurtzman, this pattern will not only continue but ramp up significantly as "Star Trek" continues to explore a brand new frontier: streaming. More specifically, the Paramount+ platform.

"Star Trek" made its streaming introduction in 2017 with "Star Trek: Discovery," opening the floodgates for a constant flow of new titles to join the fray. The likes of "Star Trek: Picard" and "Star Trek: Prodigy" have since arrived on Paramount+ to varying levels of success, with "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" being the most recent. Set before the program that started it all, the show follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and other familiar names as they board the USS Enterprise to check out various unexplored interstellar locales.

At the time of this writing, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is still in the midst of its first season, yet fans have already shared some strong feelings about what it has to offer.

Most think Strange New Worlds is among the best Star Trek shows

In May of 2022, Reddit user Dentifrice offered up their straightforward thoughts on the first few episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." They go on to list what they love about the show and even refer to it as the best "Star Trek" project since "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," which aired from 1993 to 1999. While some of the original poster's points did draw some critique from those in the comments, the majority of those who offered up their two cents agreed about "Strange New Worlds." The story, characters, and overall presentation got the seal of approval from much of the community.

One could easily argue that a part of what has made "Strange New Worlds" such a hit with fans is the degree of creative freedom it gives those behind the lens. According to Anson Mount in an interview with Collider, directors come in ready to do their job, but at the same time, they get to pursue their own ideas and desires. "We've been encouraging the directors to come in with their own visions. Not only in terms of lenses or style, but what genre do you want to do? What do you want to see?" he said, noting that the episodic format helps make this level of collaboration possible.

It's great that fans have enjoyed "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," and it's just as great to know that the minds behind it have been able to approach it in creatively fulfilling ways. With that, it's clear that Season 2 cannot come soon enough, regardless of which side of the production you're on.
