Scorn Release Date, Gameplay And Plot - What We Know So Far

"Scorn" is an upcoming first-person horror adventure, taking place in a gross unknown world. Developer Ebb Software has described its world as "a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry." Originally set to launch alongside the Xbox Series X|S, "Scorn" has been delayed a few different times. The designs of the world and creatures in "Scorn" have been described as being inspired by artist H. R. Giger, whose artwork blends humans and mechanics in a grotesque and futuristic way.

The adventure horror game has revealed very little about its plot, with Ebb Software stating that it wants players to feel like they were just dropped into the world, without warning or preamble. From the trailers that have been released, it seems to be a more subdued type of horror game, focusing on a creepy atmosphere and enemies instead of cheap jump scares. Here's what we know so far about "Scorn.".

Does Scorn have a release date? What will it release on?

"Scorn" is set to come to Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 21, just in time for Halloween. The game is a console launch exclusive, so it will come to PlayStation eventually, although it is unknown how long the exclusivity window is. "Scorn" is also launching on Xbox Game Pass for console, PC, and cloud, so if you subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate, you can enjoy "Scorn" anywhere you want.

"Scorn" will also be available on PC via Game Pass, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, so PC players have a variety of options for getting freaked out by body horror and strange creatures. While the game has been delayed multiple times, it seems likely that "Scorn" will actually hit its October 21 release date. In an Xbox Wire post after the Xbox and Bethesda showcase, the development team noted that it had hit its final major milestone in December, so the team is just polishing the final product.

What is Scorn's gameplay like?

As shown in the extended "Scorn" gameplay demo, the game skirts the line between adventure game and first-person-shooter. Players explore the environment in the first person, solving puzzles and avoiding enemies. There are a few moments where you use the weapon you are holding to take down some unfriendly creatures, but if you are expecting "Doom" or a similarly frantically paced shooter, "Scorn" isn't for you.

From itsĀ Steam description, the game is structured as a series of maze-like regions. There aren't any cutscenes and the game won't inform you if you have missed a key item in an area, so players will need to be paying attention at all times, or they might miss something important. You will also need to have full awareness of your body, as interaction with the world is realistic, so hands will move objects and hold items, instead of stuffing things into a bottomless inventory. Here's what we know about the story of "Scorn."

What is Scorn's story?

Perhaps the least discussed part of "Scorn" (intentionally so) is the plot of the game. From Steam, "Scorn" is described as throwing you into an already living world, so you will need to discover the story as you go. Each region will have different puzzles and characters, unfolding into their own unique narratives. As for who you play as and what is going on in this grotesque world, that is something you will need to discover for yourself.

While horror games do rely on players not knowing information to keep things tense, "Scorn" is taking that to the extreme, obscuring even its basic premise. From trailers, it appears as though the main character was plugged into a hive mind in this strange environment. Considering just how fantastical the setting and characters shown are, the story is likely to go to some wild places, but that is something players will need to discover for themselves.
