Shadowhunters Gets 10 Additional Episodes For Season 3

Shadowhunters is proving to be a bright light at Freeform.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney-owned cable network has handed out an additional 10-episode pickup for Shadowhunters ahead of the series' season three return. The news, which was announced this Saturday at New York Comic Con, aligned with the confirmation that its third season will kick off on Tuesday, April 3 at 8 p.m. ET, and that the back-half of the new season will air in summer 2018.

But the exciting news doesn't stop there. The Shadowhunters executives also rolled out the official trailer for season three, and announced that Hamilton star Javier Muñoz and Arrow actress Anna Hopkins will join the cast. Hopkins is set to portray a new villain named Lilith, while Muñoz is taking on part of a rival warlock that will challenge Harry Shum Jr.'s Magnus Bane.

A small-screen take on the Mortal Instruments feature franchise, which is based on the best-selling young adult fantasy book series by Cassandra Clare, Shadowhunters centers around a teenager named Clarissa "Clary" Fray (Katherine McNamara), who discovers on her 18th birthday that she is not who she thinks she is. Rather, Clary is a descendant of a long line of Shadowhunters—human-angel hybrids who devote their lives to hunting down demons. Clary is thrust into the world of Shadowhunters when her mother, Jocelyn (Maxim Roy), is kidnapped. Along with fellow Shadowhunter Jonathan Christopher "Jace" Herondale (Dominic Sherwood) and her best friend Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende), Clary journeys through a universe filled with faeries, warlocks, werewolves, and vampires, and embarks on a mission toward self-discovery as she learns more about her past, her present, and her future.

Shadowhunters was picked up straight to series, but switched showrunners after the first season. Former Smallville showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer replaced Ed Decter, who developed the television series for Freeform network. The show also features Matthew Daddario as Alexander "Alec" Lightwood, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle "Izzy" Lightwood, Isaiah Mustafa as Lucian "Luke" Garroway, Alan van Sprang as Valentine Morgenstern, Jon Cor as Hodge Starkweather, David Castro as Raphael Santiago, Jade Hassouné as Meliorn, and Kaitlyn Leeb as Camille Belcourt.

The Shadowhunters order comes just days after Freeform picked up the summer breakout series The Bold Type, led by Faking It alum Katie Stevens, for a two-season, 20-episode order under a new showrunner. Shadowhunters joins a roster of scripted originals that includes Beyond, Famous in Love, The Fosters, Young & Hungry, as well as the upcoming shows Cloak and Dagger, New Warriors, The Siren, and the Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish
