Better Call Saul Fans Speak Out On The Ideal Ending Of Saul And Kim

Spoilers for "Better Call Saul" Season 6 Episode 7 follow.

"Better Call Saul," the prequel series to the acclaimed drama "Breaking Bad," is in the midst of its 6th and final season, with its midseason finale having aired on May 23, 2022. The series will return for its final six episodes on July 11. This likely seems like a long way away for fans, following the major cliffhanger at the end of Season 6 Episode 7, "Plan and Execution." At the end of the episode, Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), who has had his reputation tarnished by Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), shows up at their apartment to confront them. Due to incredibly poor timing, Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) shows up shortly after, seeking out Jimmy and Kim, who he refers to as his lawyers. With Howard in his way, Lalo shoots and kills him, much to the horrified shock of Jimmy and Kim (and the viewers).

The unexpected death will definitely take a toll on Jimmy and Kim in the upcoming episodes — after all, they're now indirectly responsible for someone's death. Plus, with Kim missing throughout the events of "Breaking Bad," fans have already been wondering about her fate, fearing that she may not make it out alive.

Naturally, fans have a lot of opinions about the matter — here's what fans say is the ideal ending for Jimmy and Kim.

Fans want Jimmy and Kim to stay together

A few months ago (notably, prior to the events of the recent midseason finale), one "Better Call Saul" fan, u/iowntoomanynotebooks, took to Reddit to lay out a possible theory for Kim's fate — and declaring how much they love Jimmy and Kim's relationship in the process. They wrote, "I feel like it is grounded and real and I really admire how true the writing has been to these characters the whole time." In their theory, Kim is planning to leave Jimmy after getting half of his Sandpiper money.

However, this was quickly disputed by another fan u/1_aftermagnacarta, who, disagreed with the idea but was in complete agreement about the couple's relationship. They wrote, "I agree with you, I LOVE their relationship." In a follow-up comment, u/1_aftermagnacarta laid out their ideal scenario for the show's ending: "I'd like to think Kim & Jimmy stay together the entire time but realistically it probably won't happen ... Of course, I'm hoping for a Kim/Gene reunion at the end like everyone else. I don't want a super tragic ending, my heart can't take it!"

Interesting, u/Manhattan_Writer posted a similar theory about Kim planning to take the money and leave Jimmy on the day that the midseason finale aired, speculating that Kim may have never gotten over Jimmy keeping her in the dark during the scheme against Kevin Wachtel (Rex Linn). However, fans jumped in once again to lay out the evidence that Kim really loves Jimmy, with the most notable evidence being how distraught Kim was when Jimmy was missing in the desert. She also put her own life in danger to seek out information from Lalo about Jimmy's whereabouts.

Fans think that Kim may reunite with Gene

A few weeks ago, one fan, u/BetaCuckoo, posted a theory that Kim is somehow connected to Jeff (Don Harvey), the taxi driver that recognizes Gene Takavic as Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman in the Omaha flash-forwards. They've made the connection because Jeff and Kim's mother (Beth Hoyt), who we have seen in flashbacks, are shown having similar mannerisms and even say the exact same line: "What? I couldn't even hear that?" Plus, there's the fact that we know Kim is from Nebraska, the same state that "Gene" ends up in.

In the comments of this post, fans were quick to explore the theory. Another fan, u/Write416, added on to the theory, writing, "Let's say that, by the end of the 'Jimmy' storyline, Kim has had to fake her own death – or she's otherwise fled – in order to protect Jimmy from Salamancas. Maybe she, with or without Jimmy's knowledge, has set it up so that if Jimmy ever has to flee Albuquerque, HVAC Ed will bring him to Omaha, knowing that she has a brother there who will be able to find Jimmy and help them reunite." Another fan, u/No-Tap9767, added that if Kim has to disappear via the vacuum man first, then maybe she arranged for Jimmy to be placed in Nebraska (without his knowledge) if he ever needed to disappear, too.

A couple of fans pointed out that Jeff seemed too mean-spirited to be helping the couple in any way, but acknowledged that there is some connection being laid out. Regardless, fans are itching for Kim to reunite with "Gene."

Bob Odenkirk also wants Jimmy and Kim together

In June of 2021, before he had read the full sixth season of "Better Call Saul" — Bob Odenkirk gave an interview with The Guardian in which he discussed the then-approaching final season of "Better Call Saul." He even laid out his theory as to what actually happens to Kim — and it's one that fans would definitely love to see. "I don't think she dies," Odenkirk said. "I think she's in Albuquerque, and she's still practicing law. He's still crossing paths with her. To me, that would fuel his desire to be on billboards everywhere, because he wants her to see him."

Meanwhile, while speaking to Vanity Fair, Rhea Seehorn speculated as to whether or not Kim's evolution is a direct correlation to her relationship with Jimmy — or, in other words, if Jimmy is "bad for her" as Jimmy wonders (and as the Reddit fans brought up). Seehorn said, "I think one of the beautiful things [about] the show is asking these questions of nature versus nurture. Is she becoming these things because of her environment and what's happened to her, or are these things that were always part of her and you just didn't see them?" The actress explained that it might be a combination of both, adding that she finds Kim to be a mysterious character, and someone she makes decisions for while portraying that role.

We can't wait to see how Jimmy and Kim's story plays out when "Better Call Saul" returns on July 11.
