The Good Doctor Season 6 - What We Know So Far

ABC's "The Good Doctor" wrapped up its fifth season with a shocking cliffhanger on May 16, leaving viewers to wonder when they'll get answers in the form of Season 6. Since the show's premiere in 2017, the medical drama has largely focused on the surgical talents of Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and the team at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital as they save lives. But sometimes, their own lives are put into jeopardy.

For most of the Season 5 finale, it's a rather touching episode. Dr. Asher Wolke (Noah Galvin) reconciles with his dying father following years of estrangement. As for Dr. Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann), she's considering a big move to New York City, though this would impact her relationship with Dr. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee). Later on, Shaun and Lea Dilalllo (Paige Spara) finally tie the knot in a sweet rooftop ceremony set up by their colleagues.

But back inside, Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) is in trouble. Earlier in the season, she learns that nurse Dalisay Villanueva (Elfina Luk) is in an abusive relationship. When Lim goes to grab more glasses for the wedding reception, she spots Dalisay on the floor drenched in blood before the ex jumps out of the shadows and stabs her. Meanwhile, the happy couple and their guests upstairs have no idea that anything is amiss.

As fans of "The Good Doctor" not-so-patiently await new episodes, let's take a look at what we know so far about Season 6.

Season 6 will likely air in the fall with the return of favorite characters

According to Deadline, "The Good Doctor" has been picked up for a 6th season, but an official air date has yet to be announced. Given the pattern of past season premieres (via IMDB), it's likely that it will air in September.

In an interview with TV Line, "The Good Doctor" executive producer David Shore revealed that fans will see the return of key cast members, including everyone's favorite chief of surgery. Shore hinted that "Lim's journey is going to be a big part of it..." He then curbed fears that Dr. Reznick would exit the show. "We are not going to lose her, but that [decision] will have ramifications on their [Reznick and Park's] relationship...," Shore said. The show is introducing two new cast members — Brandon Larracuente and Savannah Welch as Daniel and Danica, respectively, who will make up St. Bonaventure's fresh crop of interns.

No previews have been released for "The Good Doctor" Season 6, but it's likely that early episodes will center around Lim's recovery and apprehending nurse Villanueva's violent ex. Viewers will also see Shaun and Lea navigate married life, as Reznick and Park face the possibility of a long-distance relationship or breakup.

Shore told TV Line, "That is part of the appeal of most of our stories in a sense – challenging our characters and giving them obstacles that they're not sure they can rise above. We're all confronted with various challenges in life. How we respond to them is the true test of our character."
