Watch An Animated History Of The Targaryens In Game Of Thrones Featurette

So why is House Targaryen so important on Game of Thrones? If you never read George R.R. Martin's books, the ancient history of Westeros can be a lot to wrap your head around. But a new featurette on the upcoming season 7 Blu-ray and DVD explains just how the Targaryens came to rule the realm.

Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms features the never-before-seen story of the events that shaped Westeros thousands of years before the series begins. Cast members Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger), Conleth Hill (Varys), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) narrate the series written by show writer Dave Hill.

In the first installment (above), we learn about Valyria and House Targaryen, which claimed dominion of the skies thanks to sorcery and the mastery of dragons. But while Valyria fell in the "doom," Lord Aenar Targaryen and his family left 12 years earlier and settled on Dragonstone. The family remained quiet until Aegon Targaryen decided to conquer the west, along with the seven ancient houses that ruled.

The Blu-ray and DVD features also include an extensive two-part featurette detailing the process behind the creation of some of the amazing sets in season 7, including Dragonstone, Casterly Rock, and the Dragonpit. The Blu-ray will also have a collection of seven animated pieces that provide the history of notable season 7 locations and storylines including Highgarden, Prophecies of the Known World, and the Rains of Castamere.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on Dec. 12, with digital download available as early as Sept. 25. Take a look at the cover art below, then find out how the cast of the show should really look according to the books.
