How Vikings Fans Really Feel About The Last Kingdom
While pop culture has often been infatuated with turning history into consumable viewing content, it's hard to deny that there has been a recent uptick in TV shows and movies that take place during the time of the Vikings. Arguably the most popular example of this was the History's "Vikings," which aired for 6 seasons. However, BBC also got in on the Vikings hype by creating "The Last Kingdom," a show that's actually based on "The Saxon Stories" series of novels by well-known historical fiction author Bernard Cornwell. "The Last Kingdom" moved to Netflix for its last 3 seasons, and the follow-up movie "Seven Kings Must Die" is due out on the streamer at some point (per Variety).
Naturally, one would assume that these shows would draw in similar fans given their subject matter, but that's not always the case with everything. Consider that "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" are both in the realm of science fiction but their fan bases are incredibly different. Regardless, given that the internet exists and opinions are often posted via it, we now have some idea of exactly how fans of "Vikings" feel about "The Last Kingdom."
Some Vikings viewers prefer The Last Kingdom
Over on the r/television subreddit, u/FanEu953 asked if "The Last Kingdom" was worth watching, and most of the comments seemed very positive toward the show. In fact, one of the top-rated comments on the thread actually expressed an opinion of favoring it over "Vikings." "A very good show, I personally liked it more than vikings," u/sfgiants674 said about "The Last Kingdom."
Another Redditor, u/airchinapilot, admitted to liking the series, but also expressed that their first impression of the show was more negative before giving it a second shot and finding it enjoyable. Amusingly, they pointed out that the main character, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), can be a bit too much to handle, especially in the early seasons.
Others on the thread noted that "The Last Kingdom" gets better as it goes along, and that it's better than the seasons of "Vikings" that do not feature Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). Of course, not everyone will agree with everyone else, and opinions will always be diverse, but it seems that overall, a lot of people on this particular thread who have watched both shows either enjoy them equally or prefer "The Last Kingdom."
