Moana's Age Might Surprise You

In recent years, Disney has introduced its multi-generational audiences to a slew of new fierce female leads, such as Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald), the star of 2012's "Brave." Against the wishes of her royal parents, Merida attempts to pursue her dream of archery and live her own life.

After Merida, Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) was the next to be added to the official lineup of Disney princesses. Given her heroism throughout the 2016 animated film, it's easy to see why. Upon learning that her beloved island of Motunui is in danger, she sets out on a treacherous voyage across the ocean to save it. Along the way, Moana shows bravery, courage, and determination as she seeks to find the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), battles Kakamora pirates, and, in the end, returns the lost heart of the vicious Te Kā, transforming her back into the loving island goddess Te Fiti.

Over the course of the film, Moana endures much trial and hardship, especially for someone her age. Let's take a look at how old this champion of the sea actually is.

Moana is 16 years old

When it comes to the ages of Disney princesses, some are a bit alarming. For example, Snow White, who must be kissed by a prince to break the Evil Queen's poisoned-apple curse, is only 14. On the other hand, "The Princess and the Frog" lead Tiana, an overworked waitress who accidentally gets turned into a frog, is 19 (via HuffPost).

Moana stands in the middle of the pack at 16 years old (via ABC News). Unlike many of her predecessors, Moana is extremely mature for her age as she remains focused on the mission at hand — saving her loved ones on Motunui from being consumed by the impending darkness. Additionally, her relationship with Maui is purely platonic. There are no princes waiting in the wings to sweep Moana off her underaged feet. On Reddit, u/Dudeinairport said, "Gotta give Disney credit for finally giving us a strong female lead with NO romance at all. It was refreshing." U/MightB2rue added, "If I have a daughter, I want her to believe she can save the world not that she can marry a prince."

A fun fact, when "Moana" was released, voice actor Auli'i Cravalho shared the same age as her on-screen persona (via ABC News). "I'm turning 16 the day before the film [is released] and Moana's 16," she said at the time. "Best sweet 16 ever!"
