The Brand New Cherry Flavor Scene That Has Fans Scratching Their Heads
If you were to refer to Netflix's TV mini series "Brand New Cherry Flavor" as bizarre, you would be making the understatement of the year. The narrative plucks the viewer out of their comfortable reality and drops them into the middle of a surreal, magical, and grotesque journey, the context of which is only ever vaguely explained.
The IMDb synopsis describes it as the story of "an aspiring film director in the sun-drenched but seamy world of 1990 Los Angeles [who] embarks on a mind-altering journey of supernatural revenge that gets nightmarishly out of control." While that description is accurate, there is so much more going on here.
When the main protagonist, Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar), goes searching for revenge against the producer who sexually harassed and assaulted her, she meets a strange witch who lives in an abandoned mansion and demands that Lisa sacrifice kittens to her in exchange for magical services. She agrees, unaware of the fact that those kittens will be spontaneously coming from her own body. At first, she vomits them into existence, and the witch's undead minions collect them for her. When Lisa gets sick of this and demands a stop to the literal kitten vomit, something even stranger happens which leads to a particularly unnerving scene.
Things get a little freaky in uncomfortable ways
When Lisa tells the witch that she is "done puking up kittens," it's heavily implied that what she means is she no longer wants to sacrifice kittens to the witch — especially if that means vomiting them into existence. But the witch has other plans. Instead of stopping the process entirely, she casts a magical curse which creates a new abdominal cavity in Lisa's body from where the kittens can now be birthed.
The process of giving birth via this new method is painful and horrifying to Lisa — so much so, that she demands that the witch change her back. But before that happens, she engages in an intimate scene with her love interest where he manually stimulates the hole while she moans and writhes in ecstasy. Naturally, fans had questions.
Redditor u/2BabiesInATrenchcoat created a Reddit thread asking "Why did he f*st her kitten hole?" User u/leneamarie was equally confused and left wondering the same thing, while u/LockedUp_Dragon admitted they were not prepared and felt dumbfounded after.
But if you think about it a little deeper (pun intended), it actually does make sense in the context of the show. Redditor u/vibratingstring put it best, concluding that the scene "was totally in line with [a lot] of the make-u-squirm gore and a very interesting way to have quite the graphic sex scene without genitalia."
