Players will become a new generation of Ghostbusters, customizing their own characters to help catch ghosts. The most recent "Ghostbuster" game to be released was the 2019 rerelease of "Ghostbusters: The Video Game." The announcement of a new game comes a few months after the release of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" a reboot/sequel to the original films.

Illfonic has made multiple asymmetrical multiplayer games based on movie properties at this point, with both "Friday the 13th: The Video Game" and "Predator: Hunting Grounds" on its resume. Based on the trailer, the game will be a first-person shooter for the Ghostbusters and a third-person action game for the Ghost. Here's everything we know about "Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed."

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed trailer

The announcement trailer for "Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed" shows plenty of gameplay, with some voiceovers from Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd. The trailer quickly shows off a few different maps that players can hunt ghosts on, including a museum, the sewers, a prison, and a mansion. The Ghostbusters will need to use their equipment to track down and capture ghosts in each location, using classic devices like the PKE Meter. Players are able to also customize the look of their Ghostbuster, picking different hairstyles and body types. There are also a few different colored Ghostbuster jumpsuits as well.

On the Ghost side, players can use a variety of different abilities to haunt the locals and avoid the Ghostbusters. Ghosts can utilize portals to travel across the map quickly and possess objects to move quietly through the environment. When it comes time to take the Ghostbusters head-on, they can summon a bunch of helpful ghosts to fight alongside them.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed gameplay

The goal of the game for the Ghostbusters is to track down the enemy player Ghost and trap them. This is done by tracking the ghost will tools and using the Proton Pack and wands to tether the Ghost and wear them down. Eventually the Ghostbusters will be able to use a Ghost Trap to capture the enemy player Ghost and win the match. The Ghostbusters will have to move quickly though, because if the citizens or the map get too haunted, the Ghost will win.

On the flip side, the Ghost needs to terrorize civilians and use slime to drive out people and Ghostbusters alike. If the Ghost succeeds in driving away the Ghostbusters through the power of spookiness, they win the match. There will also be a variety of different ghosts to use in the game, including the iconic Slimer. Each ghost will have different abilities, all of which can be upgraded between matches.
