Gremlins 3 Already Has A 'Twisted And Dark' Screenplay

Gremlins 3 could be on the way. Chris Columbus, who wrote the original movie, revealed in a recent interview with SlashFilm that he has already completed a script that is "as twisted and dark as anything."

"It's always a budgetary conversation when we're going to shoot it," Columbus said. "I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we'll see that movie soon."

Some have pointed out that a plot hole in Gremlins comes about through Gizmo, whose mogwai offspring cause the chaos in the films. Columbus said his script will deal with the question of whether or not Gizmo should be killed, moral implications aside. "I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you," he said of killing off Gizmo. "Too many people are dying."

If he does get to make the movie, Columbus says it will bring back the popular practical effects used in the original films, featuring "minimal CGI." "CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives easier," he said. "It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit, but it's all puppets."

Warner Bros. declined to comment when asked by io9 about the current status of the potential sequel, but if Columbus really has finished a script, it's possible that another Gremlins movie could be on the way soon. For now, see some other upcoming sequels you didn't know were being made.
