Deadpool 2 Director Promises The Sequel Will Be 'More Provocative'

You thought he was nasty the first time around. 

In news that is sure to be music to fans' ears, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch said that the sequel to the Merc with a Mouth's debut will be "more provocative" and boundary-breaking than ever before. 

Speaking in an interview with CBR, Leitch said that the runaway success of Deadpool in 2016, with all of its poking fun at the superhero movie formula, has opened up an opportunity to subvert the genre even further. The way Leitch put it, fans of the first one would accept nothing less.

"The success of the first film has given us license to explore opening up the world and actually being more provocative. That's what people are going to expect," the director said. "They did such an incredible job with the first film—I'm such a huge fan, that it's exciting to get to play in that sandbox. The fun thing about Deadpool is, there are no rules. Look at the comic book series. There aren't any rules. We break them! That's what is fun."

Leitch also elaborated on the relationship between Mr. Pool and his new onscreen buddy Cable, played by Josh Brolin in the muscled-up time traveler's film debut. The characters have a storied history together in the comics, with Cable's self-seriousness serving as a major contrast to Wade Wilson's anarchic fourth-wall breaking style. Fans of the comics, he said, would not be disappointed by the portrayal of their unlikely allegiance. "When you look at the Cable and Deadpool comic book series, you see how there is banter between them," Leitch said. "Whether they are on opposite sides or not, they are definitely formidable to each other. One is frustrating to the other. The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin is amazing. It's not unlike what you see in the Cable and Deadpool series."

All-in-all, it sounds like Leitch is taking the correct approach to his follow-up, replacing Deadpool's Tim Miller in the director's chair.
