The Unexpected Animated Movie That Just Took Over Netflix's Top Spot

Making the list of Netflix's popular movies and television shows has become a coveted achievement and where many viewers find their next content. As far as streaming services go, Netflix is still among the highest-recommended platforms, according to Business Insider. With a long line of popular Netflix Originals like "Stranger Things," "The Queen's Gambit," and "You," the streaming platform is keeping subscribers happy, even with the occasional raising of their prices (via The Verge).

Aside from engaging original content, Netflix is also the go-to spot for well-known and loved movies released outside of streaming platforms. There's a little something for everyone. Whether you're on the lookout for a good family movie or something to give you that feeling of nostalgia, it's probably on Netflix, which explains why the Top 10 list occasionally has movies or TV shows that might not be new. And a beloved animated film is currently nestled in the top spot.

Despicable Me 2 is on the Netflix Top 10 list

The 2013 animated movie "Despicable Me 2," a sequel to 2010's "Despicable Me," is currently ranked No. 1 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies in the U.S. Today list, with "Despicable Me" just behind it in fifth place.

The storyline of the sequel is as comical and adventurous as the first. It follows the now happy family and a gaggle of their yellow Minion friends as they face new adversaries and find a new member of the family and love of Gru's (Steve Carell) life, Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig). While trying to navigate his new life as a family man, Gru comes across an unexpected partnership with the eccentric Lucy, and the two can't keep from falling in love with one another, making Gru's daughters, Margo (Miranda Crosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher), very happy.

"Despicable Me 2" has won numerous awards and has even been nominated for several Oscars (via IMDb). Each movie in the series has an upbeat and smooth soundtrack to pair with some unique and entertaining characters. Between the music, the stories, the characters, and the ever-endearing band of Minions adding the perfect element of silliness, the "Despicable Me" movies are an ideal blend of family fun.
