The Book Of Boba Fett Chapter 3 Finally Confirms What Happened After Jabba's Death

Contains spoilers for "The Book of Boba Fett" Chapter 3

"Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi" marks the end of the reign of Jabba, the cruel Hutt crime lord who presides over the criminal underbelly of Tatooine. Still, after the mobster learns the hard way that it's an extremely bad idea to challenge Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and especially Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), the movie shifts its focus toward more galactic matters. In fact, fans won't find out what's been going on in Tatooine's criminal circles until "The Mandalorian," which marks the return of fan-favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), and reveals that he takes over Jabba's empire from the Hutt's former aide, Bib Fortuna (Matthew Wood).

Of course, as the present-day plot of "The Book of Boba Fett" makes extremely clear, a new crime lord can't just waltz into a power vacuum and assume that everyone immediately grants him the same territory and respect as the old crime lord had. Now, "The Book of Boba Fett" Chapter 3 finally reveals what, exactly, happened to Tatooine's criminal circles after Jabba the Hutt died.

Bib Fortuna divided Mos Espa

The fate of Jabba's criminal empire after what the droid 8D8 (voiced by Matt Berry) tactfully calls "the sail barge disaster" — aka the "Return of the Jedi" fight that left Jabba dead and Boba Fett in the belly of the sarlacc — indeed involves Bib Fortuna assuming the throne. However, the Twi'lek is well aware of his precarious position, and instead of attempting to rule via respect and terror, he relies on negotiations and networking.

He ends up dividing Mos Espa among three criminal organizations, which divides the power balance enough for him to stay in nominal charge. As it turns out, he's also the reason Mayor Mok Shaiz (voiced by Robert Rodriguez) is so disrespectful toward Fett, since it turns out Bib's rule totally involved paying bribes to the official.

Bib's actions leave Mos Espa in a situation where its three key areas are controlled by three different crime networks: the Kratoonians, the Trandoshans, and the Aqualish. As Lortha Peel (Stephen Root) explains, things descend to further chaos when Fett takes command, so if anything, it sure seems that things are about to get a whole lot more fractured before they get better.
