Dwayne Johnson Rules In Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Trailer

The Rock is trying not to cry in the first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. In the film, Dwayne Johnson will play the video game version of the nerdy Spencer, who is transported into the world of the game while cleaning out the school's basement as part of detention.

The trailer begins with the four central characters as their teenage selves in detention. There is Spencer, a nerdy kid; Stephanie, a popular girl; Fridge, a football player; and Martha, a shy girl. "You're all here for a reason," they are told. "You should be thinking about who you are and who you want to be."

They'll have time to figure that out as they clean out the basement, and they quickly learn that that mantra applies more literally than figuratively when they find an old video game console and plug it in. They each have to choose which character they want to play as, with the game saying they will become that person as they play. "Which one do I pick?" Fridge asks. "I don't think it matters much," Spencer replies.

Spencer ends up choosing to be Dr. Smolder Bravestone, while Fridge chooses to be Franklin "Moose" Finbar. Stephanie aims for Professor Shelly Oberon, a "curvy genius," leaving Martha with Ruby Roundhouse. The foursome is quickly pulled into the game, where they learn that their characters aren't necessarily what they thought.

"Where's the rest of me?" Fridge wonders after being transported into the body of Kevin Hart. Spencer, meanwhile, can't stop obsessing over the muscles of Dr. Bravestone (Johnson), while Martha wonders, as we all do, why her character (Karen Gillan) is wearing half a shirt and short shorts in the jungle. Stephanie has the most shocking transformation, as she realizes that being the "curvy genius" actually puts her in the body of Jack Black. "I like can't even with this place," Oberon says.

The jungle of Jumanji is tough to survive, but, as Bravestone points out, as video game characters, they all have special skills. The rest of the trailer (aptly set to "Welcome to the Jungle") shows off the action inherent in their new personalities, who kick, punch, and fly their way through the jungle in an effort to get back home.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is directed by Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) based on a script from Scott Rosenberg (High Fidelity). Nick Jonas, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Alex Wolff, and Morgan Turner also star. The movie is set for a Dec. 20, 2017 release; while we wait, see Gillan's skimpy Jumanji outfit and some other controversial movie costumes explained.
