Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 - What We Know So Far

With The Game Awards promising players a massive showcase of new games — some featured for the very first time — players went into the show already expecting a few surprises. However, the event proved to deliver shock after shock as new titles were revealed or further shown off. Among the unexpected announcements was a follow-up to the cult-classic "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine," much to the still-active player base's delight. The original game experienced a resurgence as of late when all DLC was made free for owners of the game. Now, that community of players has a new game on their horizon to really get excited about.

While "Total War: Warhammer 3" may have gotten most of the press as of late, "Warhammer 40,000" has no shortage of video game adaptations too. That said, there are plenty that aren't worth talking about. "Space Marine" is not one of them. The title is among the franchise's most beloved games, alongside some of its "Dawn of War" entries. The trailer shown at The Game Awards offered players a good look at what "Space Marine 2" will bring to the table, showing both gameplay and setting for the game. Here's everything players need to know about the "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2" reveal, including the release date, trailer, and gameplay info.

Does Space Marine 2 Have A Release Date?

Although the reveal of "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2" is bound to have fans eager to know when they can get their hands on the title, "Space Marine 2" did not receive a release date to accompany its trailer. However, based on the information available regarding the title's developer and publisher, some inferences can be made to determine generally when players should expect the game. The title is being developed by Saber Interactive, behind titles like "World War Z" or the upcoming and delayed "Evil Dead: The Game." Saber Interactive does have a history of working on multiple games in a given year, but considering the developer already has a few titles slated for 2022, players may not see "Space Marine 2" until later — unless, of course, the "Warhammer 40,000" title has been in development for longer than fans realized.

As far as platforms "Space Marine 2" will be playable on, the trailer was premiered by Xbox and later confirmed to be coming to Microsoft's console after it posted the trailer to YouTube noting the game would release on Xbox Series X|S. However, as noted on the game's website, it will also arrive for PC players and those lucky enough to secure themselves a PlayStation 5.

Does Space Marine 2 Have A Trailer?

Much to fans' delight, "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2" was revealed at The Game Awards alongside a trailer. The trailer opens with garbled radio chatter as the camera pans over a lonely grey planet from orbit. The next scene cuts to jets racing across the cloud-covered skies, continuing onto the dreary onset of civilization, massive citadels choked by clouds and smog. Creatures, Tyranids, scurry down a steeple as the jets blast by. As radio chatter and the sounds of combat pick up, the camera moves past the obscuring grey to reveal Astra Militarum soldiers fighting for their lives.

A grunt takes cover behind a pillar and calls for aid into his radio as the scene shifts to show the slaughter being carried out by the bestial Tyranids. As both the Astra Militarum and the Tyranids look up to see what approaches, three Space Marines drop from their aircraft, smashing to the ground like a boulder from heaven. They immediately take up the fight, mowing Tyranids down with bolters and revving through them with chainswords. After making short work of the foes and a particularly nasty Tyranid Warrior, the Space Marines make their way back to overlook the battle in the distance, but not before inspiring the saved soldiers to drop to their knees in awe. There, the Captain of the squad removes his helmet, revealing himself to be none other than the protagonist from the first title, Titus. From there, a thrilling mash-up of gameplay closes the trailer.

What Is Space Marine 2's Gameplay Like?

Luckily for fans, the reveal trailer for "Space Marine 2" ended with a short segment showcasing some varied clips of gameplay. From what little was shown, it looks like the title is shaping up to be a worthy successor the "Space Marine" series. The original game was a third-person action-adventure title that made excellent use of a wide assortment of ranged weapons along with several trusty melee options. Fans fell in love with "Space Marine" because the game allowed players to feel as powerful as the ultra-strong, genetically enhanced Space Marines in "Warhammer 40,000" mythos.

The few seconds of "Space Marine 2" gameplay show Titus rocketing down from above, making use of his jetpack to completely decimate a group of Tyranids. In another clip, he's using his bolter to mow down as many enemies as possible as a flood of the monsters rushes forth. Fans can also see the Captain take on a swarm of Tyranids with his chainsword, grinding right through them with his revved-up armament. Visually, the game is looking great and appears to be some of the most faithful "Warhammer 40,000" action seen in video games. All that's left is for fans to wait for more information to become available about the title, so they know when their life as a Space Marine will begin.
