Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Renewed For Season 5

The Agents will gear up to take on another mission. ABC (via ScreenCrush) has confirmed that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for a fifth season.

Though the broadcast network made the official season 5 renewal announcement, the show's visual effects supervisor, Mark Kolpack, took to Twitter earlier in the day to celebrate the good news. Kolpack shared a photo of the S.H.I.E.L.D.cast dancing around the set, clearly excited that they'll reprise their roles for another season. The picture is accompanied by a simple but sentimental caption: "Season five. Go team. #AgentsofSHIELD." The tweet as since been deleted, but S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg shared the same snap on his Twitter.

Fans can definitely get hyped for more Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but what's currently unknown is just how many additional episodes there will be in the fifth season. The series, which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and centers around many characters who appeared in 2012's The Avengers, may tack on another 22 episodes moving forward, or the renewal agreement may detail a reduced order. It wouldn't be entirely unlikely considering the show's in-universe competition: Marvel's The Inhumans, which is set to premiere in September.

What we do know for sure is that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will end with a bang in its season 4 finale. Entitled "World's End," the closing episode of the show's current season seems to promise it'll blow more than a few minds. Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna) is slated to return and take on the former Life-Model Decoy A.I.D.A. (Artificial Intelligent Digital Assistant). Check out the episode synopsis below, and take a look at the preview in the video above.

"Ghost Rider returns on the explosive season finale of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC. Gabriel Luna guest stars as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider. With the surprising emergence of Ghost Rider, Coulson and the team attempt to stop Aida from ending the world on the exciting season finale of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Tuesday, May 16 (10:00–11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.

Guest starring are Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez, Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider, Mallory Jansen as Aida, Adrian Pasdar as Brigadier General Glenn Talbot, Jordan Rivera as Hope Mackenzie, Patrick Cavanaugh as Burrows, Zach McGowan as The Superior, Joris Jarsky as Sergei, Zibby Allen as Lt. Evans, Joel Stoffer as silhouetted man and Karole Foreman as waitress."

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the MCU's first live-action scripted drama, and reportedly, ABC has been looking to "lower the drama's budget" (via The Hollywood Reporter). Fingers crossed that the show only cuts corners on cash and not on action, plot, or intrigue.

While we wait for more details on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, see why we think the show deserves more recognition.
