Destiny 2 Trailer Reveals A New Big Bad

The first trailer for Destiny 2 is here, and while it's light on gameplay (i.e. there isn't any), the video does an excellent job of setting up the sequel's central conflict—and explaining what happened to all of the loot you earned playing first game.

The trailer cuts between two very different pep talks—one led by Lance Reddick's Commander Zavala, and another by Nathan Fillion's Cayde-6—and while the tone varies between the two speeches (Zavala's is by the book, and Cayde's is... definitely not), they both illustrate the same point. The Last City, the home of Destiny's Tower, has been destroyed by a villain named Ghaul and his army, the Red Legion, obliterating humanity's home and ruining everyone's stuff—including returning players'. Now, Guardians must travel the solar system to stop the Red Legion menace—while, as Cayde notes, scoring some sweet loot along the way.

In addition to the new video, Bungie confirmed Destiny 2's rumored September 8 release date and revealed that fans who pre-order Destiny 2 will get access to the game's upcoming beta. In addition, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 will appear on PCs in addition to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

If you're hoping to catch a glimpse of Destiny 2's in-game action, however, you'll have to wait a little bit longer. Bungie says that a livestream showing off some of Destiny 2's gameplay will be held on May 18, and the game should have a pretty big presence at E3 2017 in June, as well.

Previously, reports claimed that Bungie is trying to make Destiny 2 feel like a "brand new game," and the trailer's unique mix of comedy and drama certainly feels more vibrant than Destiny 2's more ponderous tone. Hopefully some of these awesomely overpowered weapons will return, however. It just isn't Destiny without 'em.
