StarCraft: Remastered Coming This Summer

StarCraft is a big deal. Do you like eSports? StarCraft is pretty much responsible for the current state of the industry. And if Blizzard has its way, it's going to remain so very far into the future.

This weekend, the veteran developer announced StarCraft: Remastered, a complete overhaul of the first StarCraft game and its expansion, StarCraft: Brood War, which brings 4K graphics, updated online functionality, and more to Blizzard's seminal real-time strategy title. "StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard's DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment," Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said in a press release. "With StarCraft: Remastered, we're modernizing the original game's visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond."

In addition to upgraded visuals, StarCraft: Remastered will ship with a number of modern features, including cloud-based game saves, better matchmaking, and eight new language options. Blizzard is adamant, however, that the game itself won't change. StarCraft's "gameplay and balance have been precisely preserved," Blizzard said, "for an experience that will feel identical to veteran players."

While StarCraft: Remastered doesn't launch until sometime this summer, there's good news if this has you eager to dive back into Koprulu Sector for some interstellar action. Later this week, Blizzard will release an update that improves the stability of the original StarCraft on modern Windows machines, and from that point on, StarCraft and Brood War will be completely free to download and play.

That's awesome news for both StarCraft veterans and newbies, but watch out: StarCraft can be insanely addictive—more than one person has died of exhaustion while marathoning the game—so if you're playing, remember to take breaks. Seriously, it's easier said than done.
