The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie - What We Know So Far

"Quintessential Quintuplets" is a Japanese manga written by author Negi Haruba and published in 2017 through Kodansha's "Weekly Shonen Magazine." In 2019, the manga received an anime adaptation courtesy of Tezuka Productions. According to Anime News Network, the show aired a second season in Spring 2021.

Like many anime in the harem genre, "Quintessential Quintuplets" follows the life of a single high school boy graced with the affections of multiple potential romantic partners who are, more often than not, extremely out of his league. What sets this show apart from many of its contemporaries, however, is that all of his potential partners are identical quintuplet sisters. Furthermore, the show makes the grand promise that the protagonist, Futaro Uesugi (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka/Josh Grelle), will only marry one by the story's conclusion.

Now, it seems as if that appointed time is nearer than ever. "Quintessential Quintuplets" will release a movie, one which seems dangerously close to answering the series' penultimate question of which lucky lady Futaro ends up with. Slated with a fast-approaching release date, a cast of strong characters, and a suspenseful story, here's what we know so far about the "Quintessential Quintuplets" movie.

When will the Quintessential Quintuplets movie release?

Fans have known about the "Quintessential Quintuplets" movie since April 2021, when the anime's official Twitter account formally announced the film's existence. In addition to showing off a promotional portrait of the quintuplets decked out in full wedding attire, the tweet promised an expected release window in 2022. While this is far from a specific release date, it is something concrete for fans to count on.

Things get shakier when it comes to the film's international release, however. In the past, popular anime streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Funimation have taken charge of the series' international syndication. And while the same can likely be said for the "Quintessential Quintuplets" movie, no platform has announced its association with the film. Whether or not international fans will get to see this film at the same time it premieres in Japan is unknown. However, speed has always been the internet's forte, and it's extremely plausible that an international release of some kind will happen sooner, rather than later.

Who are the characters in the Quintessential Quintuplets movie?

At the center of this story is none other than Futaro Uesugi, a young academic prodigy who takes a new job tutoring the daughters of the wealthy Nakano family. In this situation, many high school boys would relish the opportunity to interact with five attractive identical sisters every day. For Futaro, however, money is a primary concern. Even without his stick-in-the-mud, academics-first approach to life, Futaro is more concerned about supporting his financially struggling family than romance. Even so, he can't deny the chemistry between him and each of the Nakano sisters as the series rolls on.

Meanwhile, all but one of the Nakano sisters start out with a similar disdain for Futaro. Even as all five of them — Ichika (Kana Hanazawa/Lindsay Seidel), Nino (Ayana Taketatsu/Jill Harris), Miku (Miku Itou/Felicia Angelle), Yotsuba (Ayane Sakura/Brynn Apprill), and Itsuki (Inori Minase/Tia Ballard) — are struggling to make it in school, it takes time for many of them to come around to Futaro as a tutor, let alone a boyfriend (via Myanimelist). Even so, each of them falls for him in turn, and each for a different reason specific to them and their unique personalities. It's all very character-driven, and watching these five women fall in love with the same man, and vice versa, becomes the main appeal of the series.

What is the story of the Quintessential Quintuplets movie?

The amazing thing about "Quintessential Quintuplets" isn't that its story is based on the unlikely premise of five identical sisters all falling in love with the same gentleman. Instead, it's that the show has still managed to obscure the sister the show's protagonist inevitably picks until the final hour. The movie's teaser trailer, which shows off all the sisters garbed in different wedding dresses, clouds Futaro's final choice even more. This is despite the fact that "Quintessential Quintuplets" has made it clear that Futaro would only marry one of the Nakano sisters from the beginning. There's no fan-servicing polygamy in "Quintessential Quintuplets." Instead, it just really wants to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Dressing the entire Nakano clan in bridal gowns for the trailer is just one way of achieving that goal.

When "Quintessential Quintuplets" finally does reveal the bride-to-be, it'll be a moment worth remembering. The show has spent two seasons building up to this moment, and while the movie's creators haven't released any official synopsis, the promotional material makes it clear. Fans may finally get to see who Futaro chooses, and more importantly, why. It's clear that he has potential with all of the girls, and fans of the series certainly have their suspicions (assuming they haven't finished the manga), but they'll never know for certain until the "Quintessential Quintuplets" movie releases in 2022.
