Rick And Morty's New Anime Short Finally Gets A Release Date

"Rick and Morty" has situated itself in a unique position where it can pretty much do anything it wants. The titular duo has gone on all kinds of quests, whether that entails inadvertently giving snakes the power to time travel or battle a wizard in a land where science is useless. Thanks to the multiverse, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith can go anywhere their hearts imagine, and infinite realities also give the writers the leeway to explore stories outside of the main continuity.

Those outside stories have functioned as a framing device for the various "Rick and Morty" shorts Adult Swim has released over the years. That includes a recent homage to the "Hostel" franchise, but if you ask most fans, their favorite outside adventure is the "Rick and Morty" anime special where Rick fights the Genocider. That's on top of the "Samurai & Shogun" short, where Rick ditches his sci-fi gadgets and fends off a horde of alternate versions of himself with a good, old-fashioned sword.

It appears the show isn't through with the medium just yet. A new anime short is on the way, and thanks to some internet digging, we now know when it will come out.

More Rick and Morty anime arrives on August 2

We're in the middle of "Rick and Morty" Season 5, and the next episode on deck is "Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion," which will have some anime influences of its own. The Smith family suits up in a giant Voltron-like mech suit, and the incest baby from Episode 5 returns with a new name — Naruto. There are bound to be plenty of other anime references thrown into the mix when the episode airs on August 1, making it the perfect time to release a new short based on the art form.

The @swimpedia Twitter account dropped a screenshot for the release schedule of the newest short, which has the fantastic title of "Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)." The special will air at 12:30 a.m. on August 2, so if you have it in you to stay awake for a couple more hours after "Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion" airs, then you can catch this before it makes its way to YouTube. There will also be encore showings on Adult Swim on August 5 and 7. What's even more exciting is that the short comes from Takeshi Sano, who was behind the previous "Rick and Morty vs. Genocider" special.

It's unclear if "Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)" will be a continuation of the story outlined in "Genocider," but it sounds amazing regardless. The description for the short goes as follows: "Summer's new boyfriend isn't human, Jerry's in big trouble as usual, and Rick is well ... just being Rick." It sounds like an average day in the Smith household, so don't miss the new anime in addition to "Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion" when they air next week.
