This may come as a welcome surprise to some "Guardians" fans. With the upcoming film "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" announcing a May 5, 2023 release date, this new game is just the latest part of a hype storm surrounding the Marvel universe's strangest spacebound heroes.
While there has already been some fan pushback about the fact that you only get to play as Star-Lord, the game also shows a lot of potential, especially given the popularity of the "Guardians." When is the release date for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?
You won't have to wait long to get your hands on "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy." Thanks to the game's excellent reveal trailer (more on that in a minute), fans got all the details about this upcoming title at once.
The game is described by publisher Square Enix as a "story-driven, single-player, third-person action-adventure game." It's developed by Eidos-Montréal, a Square Enix company, with collaborative support from Marvel Games. Reimagining the Guardians and creating a new story and universe involved creativity and lots of research into the 50 years of Guardians history. This process has been explored in detail through an inside look video on the game's website. Despite how intensive and time-consuming the process of creating the game has been, it has apparently been in the works for quite a whole — and fans will be able to start playing it within a few months of its reveal.

Is there a trailer for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?
The official "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy" reveal trailer actually showed off a lot of what the game has in store.
The trailer kicks off with a quick notice that states its contents are "subject to change," then quickly launches into a cinematic look at outer space. Star-Lord's birthright is discussed, hinting that the game may explore Peter Quill's origin story. In true "Guardians of the Galaxy" fashion, plenty of jokes and lighthearted moments are weaved in, the first of which comes when Groot's shaky paperwork skills lead to the Guardians being named "Gardeners of the Galaxy."
An epic gameplay preview follows in which Peter attacks a blue, catlike beast with tentacles, firing pink projectiles at it in epic slow-motion fashion. Next are more quick cuts of flying spaceships, playful camaraderie amongst the team, and, of course, plenty of combat.
Towards the end of the trailer, a giant sunlike creature's face fills the screen as the Guardians listen and announces, "In less than three cycles, all will be lost. The galaxy cannot be saved, Peter Quill." Of course, it seems the game's developer has faith in your abilities. Large lettering appears on the screen, announcing, "You got this." This is followed by a less confident caveat: "Probably."
What is the gameplay like in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy?
Just as the story promises a "fresh but faithful take" on the franchise and the 80s mixtape promises rocking good times, gameplay looks to be both dynamic and varied.
In addition to the reveal trailer, gamers have also gotten to see a 10-minute gameplay preview. Players take on the role of Star-Lord, who gets to make strategic choices about which of his fellow Guardians' abilities will be activated as battles commence. Decisions are also available to players when it comes to dialogue, which can change the course of the game. Since you're calling the shots as Star-Lord, you can incorporate everything "from Element Blasters and jet boot-powered dropkicks to tag-team beat-downs" into your combat style.
As shared through an announcement on the game's website, the storyline promises plenty of excitement that will be smoothly integrated with the action-packed gameplay. The Guardians' thirst for adventure and money leads them on a bizarre journey, though it's not long before they discover "they've set off a chain reaction of catastrophic events" that they have to fix themselves.
