The Most Popular Game In The Spyro Series May Surprise You

A recent SVG survey revealed the most popular "Spyro" game, and it might not be what you think. 1,800 gamers from around the world were asked to pick between "Spyro: Year Of The Dragon," "The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon," "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage," "Spyro The Dragon," and "Other," and one clear victor emerged with a whopping 53% of the vote.

The series' third installment, "Spyro: Year Of The Dragon," was picked by more than half of the survey participants, making it far and away the most popular game in the franchise.

On Metacritic, it boasts a 91/100 critic score and an 8.9/10 user score. Similarly, IGN gave it a 9.1/10 "Amazing" rating, giving particular praise to its newly-added multiplayer elements.

Part of its resurgence in popularity may have something to do with "Spyro Reignited Trilogy," the 2018 remake of the first three "Spyro" games. The remastered collection was a hit with fans and professional reviewers alike.

So, how did the other "Spyro" games stack up? While none can touch the popularity of "Spyro: Year Of The Dragon," a few of the remaining titles are still the #1 picks in some fan's minds.

"Spyro The Dragon" scored 21% of the vote. Though it's not much, it's the only other game that got some significant love from survey participants. It's hard not to love the original, especially once you find out Mark Hamill makes a voice acting appearance in the game as Malefor the Dark Master. In fact, he's not the only celebrity to make an appearance in the "Spyro" franchise.

After another big drop-off in vote percentage, "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage" and "The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon" both got 9% of the vote. "Other" was in dead last with 8%, likely due to the fact that the most popular "Spyro" games were already listed as options. Games cited in the survey's comments section include spin-off titles like "Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure" and "Spyro: A Hero's Tail."
