What The Critics Are Saying About Loki
Marvel Studios' creative partnership with Disney+ has gotten off to an incredibly strong start this year. The studio's first two Disney+ series, "WandaVision" and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," both received widespread acclaim for their unique structures and compelling character arcs. Now, the studio is looking to continue its current wave of success with its third official Disney+ series, "Loki," which is set to make its long-awaited premiere on the streaming service this week.
As its title suggests, "Loki" will give MCU fans the opportunity to spend more time with the fan-favorite trickster antihero (Tom Hiddleston) than ever before. Focusing on the Loki variant that escaped with the Tesseract during the time heist in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," the Disney+ series follows the character as he is captured by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and recruited into helping them catch an elusive individual who is said to pose a massive threat to the "sacred timeline," and the multiverse at large. The series promises to deal directly with some of the time travel mechanics first introduced in "Avengers: Endgame," and could play a major role in helping set up the overall conflict of Phase Four of the MCU.
That is, admittedly, a lot for one TV show to try to do, but it doesn't sound like Marvel fans need to be at all worried about the quality of "Loki" — because critics are already praising the series.
The first reviews for Marvel's Loki are overwhelmingly positive
Ahead of its Disney+ premiere later this week, various TV and film critics were given access to the first two episodes of "Loki," and have taken to Twitter to share some of their initial — and very positive — thoughts about the series.
Diego Andaluz of Discussing Film tweeted that "Loki" may be "the BEST series of the #MCU so far," calling Hiddleston's lead performance "charismatic" and praising the series for its "remarkably clever writing, and stunning visual craftsmanship" as well as its "sharp direction." Screen Rant's Rob Keyes teased that the show's second episode "brings a little 'Rick and Morty' style (and a new layer) to the MCU," and stated that "Tom Hiddleston meets his match on screen with Owen Wilson's Mobius and [watching] them on screen together is something we should hope lasts for several seasons."
ComicBook's Brandon Davis similarly praised Hiddleston and Wilson's on-screen chemistry, tweeting, "Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson are glorious together." Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky also noted that the duo are "HILARIOUS together!" Elsewhere, Josh Wilding of ComicBookMovie advised fans to, "take everything you thought you knew about #Loki and throw it aside because this series will surprise you and delivers a wholly unexpected take on the #MCU," before noting that the series "feels like it'll be one of those ICONIC @MarvelStudios projects."
Meanwhile, Adam Barnhardt of ComicBook.com promised that the series "starts off incredibly well," applauding the series for its "top-shelf Marvel humor." The critic also called the show's animated talking clock, Miss Minutes, "a superstar," and said the series "has the makings of something special."
In other words, it looks like "Loki" is already shaping up to be another massive success for Marvel Studios and Disney+.
