Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker - What We Know So Far

Following a disastrous debut in 2010, "Final Fantasy 14" managed to reinvent itself as "A Realm Reborn." Thanks to a massive overhaul and years of support and DLC, the MMORPG joined offerings like "Grand Theft Auto Online" and "No Man's Sky" on the growing list of now highly-lauded games that bombed at launch. As revealed in early 2021, publisher and developer Square Enix has even more "Final Fantasy 14" content on the way in the form of a fourth expansion pack titled "Endwalker."

"Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker" promises to transport players to new locales, introduce fresh playstyle options, and tie up some loose ends. Whether you've traversed Hydaelyn since Version 2.0 dropped in 2014 or have just started to uncover all the world has to offer, it's natural to wonder what changes and challenges the impending expansion will introduce. Here are the key details Square Enix has shared about "Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker" up to this point.

What is the Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker release date?

Square Enix first teased "Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker" back in February. A launch target accompanied the announcement: Fall 2021. As reported by NME, the company revealed the official release date over three months later as part of the "Final Fantasy 14" digital Fan Festival. According to game director Naoki Yoshida, "Endwalker" will release on November 23, 2021; however, anyone who pre-orders the title will get early access to the expansion on November 19.

The digital event also included pertinent information regarding the different "Endwalker" editions fans can purchase. Priced at $199.99, the Collector's Edition comes with a physical art box, Paladin statue, several art prints and a frame, an Azem pin, and Loporrit Mini Plush. Additionally, you will receive all the in-game items that accompany the Digital Collector's Edition: Arion Mount, Wind-Up Porom Minion, and Death Scythe. On its own, the Digital Collector's Edition costs $59.99. All pre-orders, including the $39.99 Standard Edition, include two other virtual goodies: Wind-up Palom Minion and the EXP boosting Menphina Earring.

"Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker" launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Mac later this year.

Is there a trailer for Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker?

Square Enix has shared two trailers for "Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker" — a three minute teaser and a nearly six minute "full trailer."

The February 5 teaser sets up the premise of the expansion with a succession of cinematic scenes that hint at the newest challenge the Warriors of Light must face. At the May digital Fan Festival, the full trailer built on the foundation established in the initial teaser with three additional minutes of footage. The extended clip offers a look at the new locations and classes that will feature in "Endwalker," in addition to the return of a few fan favorite characters and some of the enemies players can expect to face.

While not trailers for the expansion as a whole, the developers have also provided more focused videos that show off the fresh "Endwalker" classes and race: SageReaper, and male Viera. These segments even include some gameplay.

What is the story like in Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker?

According to an article on the Square Enix blog that accompanied its reveal, "Endwalker" will have significant ramifications for the "Final Fantasy 14" narrative. The new main scenario questline is slated to wrap up the Hydaelyn and Zodiark storyline as the Warriors of Light take on "what might be their biggest challenge yet ... a second advent of the Final Days." The official website expands on this, indicating that the roster of new threats will include figures such as Anima and the Magus Sisters.

"Endwalker" unfolds across several never-before-seen locales, such as the cities of Old Sharlayan and Radz-at-Han. New areas like Labyrinthos, Thavnair, and Garlemald will also be on display, in addition to a new residential district, Ishgard. As the expansion aims to resolve threads from throughout the MMORPG's lifetime, the plot highlights the evolution of multiple characters. Alphinaud, for example, has transitioned to the Sage class, while Zenos sports the freshly minted Reaper job.

As the name implies, "Endwalker" will see players navigate multiple endings: the end of a major story arc and maybe even the world itself.
